Event
Sign Language Policies/Language Planning
This talk focuses on linguistic policies and sign languages.
It will be presented a review of sign languages and their
users, to contextualize the discussion about different
aspects of language planning around the world. Sign
languages are used in countries where spoken languages are
used by the majority of the society. As minority languages,
there are implications relating to their functions, roles
and status that will be addressed. International
organizations, as well as local ones, will have some impact
on the linguistic policies related to sign languages. After
presenting a general view of the situation of sign
languages, the talk will focus on linguistic policies and
language planning in Brazil, considering actions taken with
respect to Brazilian Sign Language related to corpus
construction, status and their use in education.
